The New Landscape: Why BA Skills Matter More in the AI Era

Welcome & what you'll learn

Welcome to AI-Ready Requirements: Eliciting and Writing Specs for AI and Agentic Projects. I'm glad you're here, whether you're brand new to business analysis or you've been doing this work for years. This lesson sets the stage for everything that follows, so let's talk about what you'll learn and why it matters right now, in the middle of this AI shift reshaping software projects.

By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to do three things: name the five modules that make up this course and what each one covers, explain why business analysis skills actually matter more in the AI era, not less, and know exactly how to approach the course so you get real value out of it. Let's start with a quick introduction.

This course is for you whether you're just starting out or you've been at this for years. I'm a Senior Product Manager with 30 years of experience in software development, and over those three decades I've built and refined business analysis skills that hold up no matter how the technology changes. That's the whole point here: you're not just learning today's AI tools, you're building capabilities for whatever comes next.

Here's what we'll cover together. We start with the new AI landscape and why your skills matter more now. Then we move into eliciting requirements for agentic systems, ones that can make their own decisions. From there, writing specs that AI and developers can actually use. Next, working with AI-generated content, verifying, correcting, improving. And finally, mastery: leading AI and agentic projects as a business analyst, not just supporting them.

It's tempting to worry AI makes business analysis less relevant. It's actually the opposite. AI, and especially agentic systems that make their own decisions, need clear requirements and well-written specs more than ever. Someone has to ask the right questions, verify what AI drafts, and lead with judgment. That someone is you. Your role is shifting from support to leadership, and that's exactly what this course prepares you for.

How you approach this course matters. Take the lessons in the order they're presented, because eliciting requirements comes before writing specs, and writing specs comes before verifying AI content. Skip ahead and you might miss foundations later lessons assume. And complete every action step. Reading alone won't build the skill; practice is where these ideas turn into habits you can actually use on real projects.

So let's recap. This course passes on business analysis skills that outlast any specific technology. It covers five connected areas, from the AI landscape all the way to leading agentic projects. Your value as a business analyst is going up in the AI era, not down. And to get the most out of it, take the lessons in order and complete every action step along the way.

So here's your action step for this lesson: commit to taking the lessons in the order presented, and complete the action steps in each one before you move on. That sequence and that practice are what turn these ideas into real, usable skills. Do that, and you'll come out ready to lead AI and agentic projects, not just support them. Let's get started.
